2024 SCRIPPS SPELLING BEE RESULTS
As part of Inspire – ECU – A Division of WFCU Credit Union’s community engagement program – the Bee promotes literacy and language arts in a fun and engaging way and provides area youth from grades 4 to 8 the opportunity to compete for a chance to represent the Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and GTA communities at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland.
2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee
At the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee, 10-year-old Arshan tied for 60th place. Arshan was one of six grade four students at The Bee! ECU is incredibly proud of Arshan for his accomplishments, especially as one of the youngest competitors. Great work, Arshan!
ECU – A Division of WFCU Credit Union Regional Spelling Bee
Following an intensive and exciting Sunday afternoon competition of local middle school students from across the Waterloo Region and beyond, Arshan Shahriar, a grade 4 student at Selwyn Elementary School in Toronto, has been named the 2024 ECU Scripps Regional Spelling Bee champion, successfully spelling the winning word hijab. With 16 finalists competing, this year’s Bee marked the second year a Regional Bee has been hosted in the Waterloo region.

The Bee helps students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. In addition to the academic benefits, students also develop important life skills—like goal setting, time management, and public speaking—that will help them as they advance in school and eventually lead to successful careers.
